MASTER MUSICIAN SONIA TUBRIDY DIES AT 76

by Terry McNeill (from Classical Sonoma)

Wednesday, December 1, 2021

North Coast musician and impresario Sonia Tubridy died Nov. 26 in her Guerneville home from cancer. It was the second recent local loss of a musician of manifold talents, following in May the death of Santa Rosa pianist and teacher Norma Brown.

Manifold talents characterized Sonia, as she was a choral director, pianist, soprano, klezmer artist, violinist, and played the cello and accordion. She was fluent in German, Hebrew, English and French, and was deeply involved in Israeli culture and politics, having lived for many years in her youth on a Kibbutz. Her analysis of American politics and culture was trenchant.

Born in 1945 in Berlin, Sonia’s arrival in Sonoma County began a long association with area music. She was the founder of the River Choir, music director at Congregation Shomrei Torah, Artistic Director of the Redwood Arts Council in Occidental, and an avid concert goer in San Francisco and Sonoma County with her musical father (Dean) and musical confident Nicki Bell.

Sonia hosted scores of house concerts in her cozy house above Guerneville and was in productions at the Cinnabar Theater, 6th Street Playhouse, Spring Lake Village, Humboldt State University’s Chamber Music program, Analy High School, SRJC Summer Repertory Theater, American Liszt Society and Concerts Grand. Her generosity and charm knew no bounds.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, an Irish art painter, and is survived by her children Finbar, Laura and Shannon, and her younger brother David of Tel Aviv.
